What is honeycomb?

January 24, 2007 by jsliw

honeycombHoneycomb is a hexagonal wax cells built by honey bees in their nests to contain their larvae and stores of honey and pollen.

Why honeycomb? From the research author Christian Kreibich, it has double meaning –”Extension of honeypot”,”Combing the traffic pattern from honeypot”.

honeycomb-large.pngHoneycomb is a system automated generate the network intrusion detection signature. It good for spooting worms.

Currently,NIDS signature creation is a manual and tedious job that require detail and pro skill.Honeycomb can take over the job to generate those signature automatically. At the same time, avoid from the simplistic signatures tend to
generate large numbers of false positives; overly specific ones cause false negatives.

Challenge begun, literature review…..Zzzz

UbuntuHoneycomb was running on unix enviroment.Ubuntu 6.06 LTS Dapper Drake had been choosen as my project platform. The main reason i choose Ubuntu is i shipped the CD free.:p

From distro watch,it is the top 1 user choice for last 12 month, ubuntu had a huge user community, users can get the support and solution easily.

I had opened 2 Gmail account for the spamming mail!

“The ubuntu-users list is where most technical support discussions occur, and where users of Ubuntu meet to discuss new features and ideas they would like implemented in Ubuntu. NB: this is a very high traffic mailing list! It gets around 200 messages a day.”
